Millions of starfish dying mysteriously in recent months in the western US coast from Alaska to southern California. Biologists who emphasize the key role of these invertebrates in the coastal cleaning seashells ecosystem, are worried about.
Likely mass extinction began in June 2013 when the first cases were noted of dead starfish. The two most affected species are Pisaster ochraceus - starfish with purple and Pycnopodia helianthoides, called sea sun. Last met in different colors and is considered the largest starfish - its diameter may not exceed m.
The most commonly observed cleaning seashells symptoms that led to the extinction of marine invertebrates are white surface cleaning seashells disabilities who quickly expand, followed by a softening of the animal, loss of tentacles and decomposition of the body, leading to death several days after onset of symptoms.
So far, scientists have not found the cause of the mass extinction. They suggest that it is due to pathogens such as parasites, virus or bacterium that infects the starfish and impairs the immune system and makes them vulnerable to secondary bacterial infections, leading to the observed physical disabilities.
In 1983, a mass death of starfish on the southern coast of California almost destroy species Pisaster ochraceus. In 1997 was observed limited extinction. It was explained by the warming of the ocean as a result of the current El Niño in the South Pacific.
Starfish Pisaster ochraceus is a key predator in the coastal ecosystem. It feeds on crustaceans such as mussels and abalone. If this kind of disappear, the population of the molluscs will increase substantially, cleaning seashells which may profoundly alter the rock ecosystem, scientists say. Starfish cleaning seashells larvae are an important component of plankton, which is the basis of the food chain in the oceans.
